we know that resistance is directly proportional to the temperature.since nichrome is an alloy so it has more resistance hence , it gets more heated.that is why we use nichrome wire in heater for producing more heat to cook food.we know that alloy has more resistance than a metal. so nichrome has more heat produced capacity than copper wire.so copper has less temperature than nicrome.

Two identical wires one of Nichrome and the other copper are connected in series and current I is passed through them.

We have to

  1. state the change observed in the temperature of the two wires.
  2. Justify our answer and state the law which explains the above observation.

From the experimental data, It is observed that the resistivity of the Nichrome wire is higher than that of copper, so the resistance of it is also higher than that of copper.

Therefore, At a constant current, heat produced by nichrome wire is larger than heat produced by copper wire. Hence, change in temperature observed for Nichrome wire is more than the change in temperature observed for Copper wire. And this could be explained by Joule's law of heating.

Joule's law of heating : It states that heat dissipated or produced by a wire is

  • directly proportional to the square of current flowing through it.
  • directly proportional to the resistance of wire
  • directly proportional to the time taken.

i.e., H ∝ i²Rt

H = Ki²Rt, here K is proportionality constant which is equal to 1.

∴ H = i²Rt

If I = constant.

⇒ H ∝ R

It shows that higher the resistance, higher the production of heat will be.

Now if heat produced is higher , it means the change is temperature is also higher. [∵ H = msΔT ⇒ H ∝ ΔT]

Hence it is justified that the change in temperature is higher for Nichrome wire.
