The first instrument was the Interdict, which would deny religious benefits to a subject and thereby increase his animosity towards his ruler. The second was that of Excommunication, where the individual was deprived of all Christian privileges, and could not take part in religious ceremonies or sacraments at Church or be buried in holy ground.
