The Pope and the Church used religious sacraments to establish authority over the common people and punish those who defied the Church. The first instrument was the Interdict, which would deny religious benefits to a subject and thereby increase his animosity towards his ruler. The second was that of Excommunication, where the individual was deprived of all Christian privileges, and could not take part in religious ceremonies or sacraments at Church or be buried in holy ground.
