nitrogen is less reactive so it can't easily react with any element
oxygen may react easily

The presence of oxygen can be tested by placing a lit matchstick at the mouths of both jars. The matchstick will burn out near the nitrogen-filled jar. This way we can identify jar contains oxygen and nitrogen.
