The story “Two Kinds” reflects on the relation of a mother and her daughter who had been brought up in different cultures. Suyuan, Jing-mei's mother wanted her to become child prodigy of America. Suyuan tests her daughter in different activities restlessly. When Suyuan watched a Chinese girl of nine years playing piano on the TV, she teaches Jing-mei at least to try. She gives Jing-mei piano lessons too. Jing-mei too tries hard but fails.

In the story, young Jing-Mei is compelled by her mother to learn Piano from Old Chang, a retired piano teacher who was deaf.
But Jing-Mei had no interest in learning Piano and so did not learn to play properly. Her mother made her to play piano in the talent show held in the church hall.
Chong's reaction to Jing-mei`s performance at the talent show
At the talent show, Jing-Mei performed very badly. But old Chong being deaf, was the only person who was shouting Bravo and well done for Jing-Mei's performance. He was very happy at Jing-Mei's performance.
