Given:

Parallel forces p and q of magnitude 38N and 86N respectively.

Acting at the distance of 6cm.

To Find:

the magnitude of the resultant and its position concerning force p

Solution:

 [Resultant is denoted by R]

R = \sqrt({F_{1}+F_{2})^{2}    }

  = \sqrt({38+ 86)^{2} }

  = 124N

So, the position of the resultant is "∅".

Let the position be P. magnitude be x, distance be d.

   ⇒ P × M = q × d

   ⇒ 38 × x = 86 × (6-x)

   ⇒ 38x = 86(6-x)

   ⇒ 38x = 516 - 86x

   ⇒ 38x + 86x = 516

   ⇒ 124x = 516

   ⇒ x = 4.16cm.
