Two masses 3 kg and 2 kg are suspended from the ends of a light string which is passing over a frictionless pulley. If pulley is pulled up with an acceleration g, then the magnitude of acceleration of the blocks w.r.t the pulley will be:
1) 2g/5
2)g/5
3)3g/5
4)4g/5

Given :

Masses of two bodies are 3 kg and 5 kg.

Acceleration = g

To solve :

Magnitude of acceleration of the blocks with respect to the pulley.

Solution :

It is given that two masses of 3 and 2 kg are connected to a string passing through pully.

Let

m = 2 kg

M = 3 kg

Pully is frictionless it means there is no frictional force between pully and string.

in the given figure :

 m_{1} = m = 2kg \\ m_{2} =M   = 3kg

here m < M

Let the the direction of acceleration is downward from 3 kg mass.

So

mass of the system M° = m + M = 2 +3 = 5 kg

So

Force on M mass :

Mg - T = Ma

where T = Tension on string.

a = acceleration of system.

So

3g - T = 3 a (equation 1)

similarly

Force on mass m :

T - mg = ma

T - 2g = 2a (equation 2)

Adding equation 1 and 2 :

3g - 2g = 3a + 2a

g = 5a

so

a \:  =  \frac{g}{5}

So,

Correct option is (2)
