Two masses = 8kg and 12kg are connected at

the ends of a light inextensible string.

Find the acceleration of the masses and

the tension in the string when the masses

are released.

According to the question,

First we can draw the figure.

Draw F. B. D diagram of both the block

12 kg block goes down so acceleration is

goes downward.

For F.B.D of block 8kg equation are

T - 8g = 8a ......(1)

For F. B. D of block 12kg equation are

12g - T = 12a .....(2)

From equation (1) and (2) we get,

=> 4g = 2a

=> a = 2 m/s^2

put the value of a in equation (1) we get,

=> T - 8g = 16

=> T - 80 = 16

=> T = 96 N

Therefore,

Acceleration of the mass = 2 m/s^2

Tension in the string = 96 N
