Answer :-

 a = \dfrac{g}{3}

Given :-

Two blocks of mass M and M/2 are joined with frictionless pulley.

To find :-

Acceleration of block of mass M/2.

Solution:-

Since,

The pulley is friction less.

Tension force is equal for two blocks.

Let tension force be T.

  • For block of mass M.

 Mg - T = Ma

 T = Mg - Ma

 T = M( g -a) ----1)

  • For block of mass M/2.

 T - \dfrac{M}{2}g = \dfrac{M}{2}a

 \dfrac{2T- Mg}{2}= \dfrac{Ma}{2}

 2T - Mg = Ma

  • Put the value of T.

 2(Mg - Ma ) -Mg = Ma

 2 Mg - 2 Ma - Mg = Ma

 Mg = 3Ma

 a = \dfrac{g}{3}

hence,

The acceleration of block of mass M/2 is   \dfrac{g}{3}
