Two men 960m apart stand at the same distance from a vertical hillock. One of them fires the shot and other hears the echo 2 sec after hearing the direct sound. find the distance of the men from the hillock assuming the velocity of sound as 320m/s.

Answer:

Step-by-step explanation:

Given: Distance between the two men = 800 m , v = 340 m/s , distance between the two men from the hillock is same.

Solution:

The time taken (t) for the direct sound to be heard by the other man = d / v

= 800/340 seconds

t = 40/17 seconds

Now, since the other man hears the echo 3s after the direct sound is heard ,

Therefore; total time taken(T) to hear the echo = ( t + 3 ) s

= 40/17 + 3

T = 92/17 seconds

Now;

T = 92/17 s , d (dist. of the two men from the hillock) = ? , v = 340m/s

Therefore;

distance of the two men from the hillock( = distance of one man from the hillock) = vT/2

= (340 × 92/17 × 1/2) m

= 920m (Ans)

Given:

The distance between two men = 960 m

Speed of sound = 320 m/s

Time after which the other hears the echo when he has already heard the original sound = 2 sec

To find:

The distance between the two men.

Solution:

When the sound directly reaches the other man, the time taken will be:

Time = distance/ speed = 960/ 320 = 3 s

If the echo is heard after 2 sec, then time after which echo is heard is

t' = 3+2 sec = 5 sec

Therefore we can use the following relation now:

2d = t'* 320

d = 5 * 320/ 2 = 5* 160

= 800 m = 0.8 km

Therefore the distance of the men from the hillock is 0.8 km.
