Two metals X and Y form the salts XSO₄ and Y₂SO₄ respectively .
The solution of salt XSO₄ is blue in colour and whereas that of Y₂SO₄ is colourless.
When Barium chloride solution is added to XSO₄ solution , then a white precipitate Z is formed along with a salt which turns the solution green.
And when barium chloride solution is added to Y₂SO₄ solution , then the same precipitate Z is formed along with the colourless common salt solution .

a) what could the metals X and Y be ?
b) Write the name and the formula of the salt XSO₄?
c) Write the name and the formula of the salt Y₂SO₄ ?
d) What is the name and formula of precipitate Z ?
e) Write the name and formula of the salt which turns the solution green in the first case

Hey there,
____________________________

XSO⁴ is blue in colour. As we know that CuSO⁴ is blue in color, we can infer that X is Cu.

Now, Y²SO⁴ is colorless, from this we can infer that it would probably be an alkali metal.

Now, BaCl² is added to these salts, a white ppt is formed which would probably be BaSO⁴ (White in color). Now When XSO⁴ and CuSO⁴ react with BaCl² two salts XCl² and YCl are formed respectively.

Now we know that XCl² is green in color, which is a property of CuCl². This further consolidates that X is Cu.

We also know that YCl is colorless common salt solution this we can conclude that YCl is NaCl and Y is Na.

Answers:-

a) X- Cu and Y- Na

b) XSO⁴ - CuSO⁴- Copper sulphate

c) Y²SO⁴ - Na²SO⁴ - sodium sulphate

d) Z- BaSO⁴- Barium Sulphate

e) Copper chloride - CuCl²

Hope it helps ^_^

a) X- Cu and Y- Na

b) XSO⁴ - CuSO⁴- Copper sulphate

c) Y²SO⁴ - Na²SO⁴ - sodium sulphate

d) Z- BaSO⁴- Barium Sulphate
