Answer :

Two wires having resistances 5Ω and 10Ω are connected in parallel across a battery.

We have to find ratio of energy consumed by the R₁ and R₂.

Remember that, Potential difference across each resistor in parallel connection remains same.

Let voltage of battery be V.

Therefore voltage across R₁ and across R₂ will also be V.

Energy consumed by resistor in parallel connection is given by

  • E = V²/R

★ Energy consumed by R₁ :

➝ E₁ = V²/R₁

➝ E₁ = V²/5 ___ (I)

★ Energy consumed by R₂ :

➝ E₂ = V²/R₂

➝ E₂ = V²/10 ___ (II)

By taking ratio of (I) and (II), we get

➝ E₁/E₂ = V²/5 × 10/V²

➝ E₁/E₂ = 10/5

E₁ : E₂ = 2 : 1
