Two monkeys of masses 16kg and 25kg are standing on the horizontal floor as shown . they stand holding a rope passed over a smooth , light pulley from which a banana is hung. both monkeys get lifted up together, when the larger monkey climbes up with an acceleration of 1.2 m/ s^2. then- (i) which monkey will reach the banana first?
(ii) what is the height of the other monkey from the floor when this happens?

Answer:

(i) Monkey with 16 kg will reach the banana first.

(ii) Monkey with 25 kg reaches 1/2 the height.

Explanation:

(i)

T=30+ 250

T= 280N

T-25g = 25x1.2

T-25g= 30N......... (i)

T-16g= 16 x a

280-160=16 x a

120 = 16 x a

a = 120/ 16

a = 7.5 m/s^2

Monkey with 16 kg climbs with a = 7.5 m/s^2.

Monkey with 25 kg climbs with a = 1.2 m/s^2.

Hence, Monkey with 16 kg will reach the banana first.

(ii)

Monkey with 25 kg reaches 1/2 the height of the first money.
