Let the two numbers be X and (X-4).

According to question,

X+(X-4)=40
=>X+X-4=40
=> 2x-4=40
=>2x=40+4
=>2x=44
=>X=44/2
=22

The two numbers are X=22 and (X-4)=(22-4)=18.
Hence,the larger number is 22.
