Given : Two neutral insulating small spheres are rubbed against each other and are then kept 4m apart.

To find : 1. The charge on each sphere if they attract each other with a force of 3.6 N.

2. The number of electrons transferred from one sphere to the other during rubbing.

solution : Let the charge on each sphere will be Q after rubbing.

From coulomb's law, F = kQ²/r²

here F = 3.6 N and r = 4m

⇒3.6 = (9 × 10^9 × Q²)/(4)²

⇒3.6 × 16 = 9 × 10^9 × Q²

⇒Q² = 3.6 × 16/(9 × 10^9)

⇒Q² = 64 × 10^-10

⇒Q = 8 × 10^-5 C

Therefore the charge on each sphere is 8 × 10^-5 C

the number of electrons transferred from one sphere to the other during rubbing, n = Q/e¯

= (8 × 10^-5)/(1.6 × 10^-19)

= 5 × 10¹⁴
