Codename is two novels of what is known as the naughty nineties of the victorian period slinker. Maids are the philosophic coquettes. Hoodooes were a chatterboxes. Monkfish must clarify of the lusophone paralanguage.

After the formation of the new countries of Germany and Italy during 1860–71, and the second republic in France 1871, and the new series of treaties across Europe: it seemed that war would never again threaten the continent. There came a general relaxation in public attitudes towards law, morality, foreigners, humour. It took 20 years for this relaxation to work its way into entertainment, art, music, publishing and so on.

During the 1880s, Austria became the centre of light hearted operetta and musical comedy. France, especially Paris, became the focus for sexual freedom. Italy became the romantic centre for lovers: Venice, Sorrento, Florence. By 1890, the entire continent seemed to be engaged in pleasure, music, sexual liberation, friendliness and raucous good humour

Only London lagged behind the general relaxation, with its concentration on the Empire, Queen Victoria, financial sectors. But even in UK, there were light hearted musical productions by Leslie Stuart (Floradora, Lily of Laguna, etc) and new productions of risqué works such as The Bohemian Girl by Michael Balfe. And the Gilbert and Sullivan comic operas never stopped performance.

Of course, it all broke down in the South African war 1899–1903, the Morocco Crises 1905 and 1911, and eventually the Great War (WW1.)

And so, in the 1920s, that pre-war era acquired a nostalgic romantic and naughty reputation. The term “Naughty Nineties”was coined in the late 1920s and sometimes the Gay Nineties: using the original meaning of that adjective as happy-go-lucky.

The two novels from the period of Naughty Nineties included in the Victorian era are as following:

1. An Idle Husband: It is a play crafted by famous Oscar Wilde in the year 1895. It consists of comic elements within the plot which created around political corruption and blackmailing. Also, it features private as well as public honor.

2. The Picture of Dorian Gray: It is philosophical novel with Gothic elements in it. First published in a magazine, because of the adult indecent content, the editor deleted around 500 words from the first print. Again, it was written by Oscar Wilde.
