Nucleic acid are mainly of two types—

  • Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA)
  • Ribonucleic acid (RNA)

★Functions of DNA—

  1. It contains the instructions for all proteins the organism will ever synthesize.
  2. It is involved in the process of vertical gene transfer, through the process called “Replication”.
  3. DNA can also be enzymatically degraded and used as a source of nucleosides and nucleotides for the cell.

★Functions of RNA—

  1. The three main types of RNA are directly involved in protein synthesis (mRNA, tRNA, rRNA).
  2. The mRNA carries the message from the DNA, which controls all of the cellular activities in a cell.
  3. The rRNA ensures the proper alignment of the mRNA, tRNA, and the ribosomes.
