Nucleic acid are mainly of two types—
- Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA)
- Ribonucleic acid (RNA)
★Functions of DNA—
- It contains the instructions for all proteins the organism will ever synthesize.
- It is involved in the process of vertical gene transfer, through the process called “Replication”.
- DNA can also be enzymatically degraded and used as a source of nucleosides and nucleotides for the cell.
★Functions of RNA—
- The three main types of RNA are directly involved in protein synthesis (mRNA, tRNA, rRNA).
- The mRNA carries the message from the DNA, which controls all of the cellular activities in a cell.
- The rRNA ensures the proper alignment of the mRNA, tRNA, and the ribosomes.
