Two number are the ratio 5:3 if they differ by 18. what are the numbers.

let the ratio be x

according to question

5x - 3x = 18

2x = 18

x = 9

So number is 45 and 27 .

Given :

x/y = 5/3

==> 3x - 5y =0 --------- (i)

x - y = 18 --------------(ii)

from eq (i) & (ii)

Multiplying eq(ii) by 3

3x - 3y = 54

On solving :

==> -2y = -18

---> y = 9

Putting the value of y in eq (ii) :

x -9 = 18

x = 27
