Two number differ by 3. The sum of twice the smaller number and thrice the greater number is 19. Find the number.

Let the smaller number be x and the larger number be y .

It is given that the two numbers differ by 3 . So ,

y - x = 3---(1)

Also , sum of twice the smaller number and thrice the greater number is 19 . So ,

2 x + 3 y = 19---(2)

So the two equations we get are ,

y - x = 3 ---(1)

2 x + 3 y = 19 ---(2)

Multiplying the equation (1) by 2 we get ,

2y-2x=6 ---(3)

Now adding equation (2) and (3)

we get ,

5 y = 25

=> y = 25/5

=> y = 5

Putting the value of y in the equation (1)

y - x = 3

=> 5 - x = 3

=> - x = 3 - 5

=> - x = - 2

=> x = 2

Therefore , the two numbers are 2 and 5 .
