5x+6x-8=4x+5x
11x-9x=8
2x=8
X=4

aloha user!!
----------------

we are given two numbers which are in the ratio 5:6.
let one of the number be x.
other number be y.

their ratio is given to be:

x/y = 5/6

now 6x  = 5y
6x- 5y = 0---------------(1)

also,

 \frac{x-8}{y-8} =  \frac{4}{5}

5 ( x-8 ) = 4 ( y-8 )
5x - 40 = 4y - 32
5x - 4y = -32 + 40
5x - 4y = 8-------------(2)

now by elimination we get:

5 ( 6x - 5y = 0 )
6( 5x - 4y = 8 )

--------------------

30x - 25y = 0
30x - 24y = 48
-----------------
-      +         -
-----------------
y = 48.

now putting the value of y in equation we get:

6x - 5y = 0
6x - 5 ( 48) = 0
6x = 240
x = 40.

------------------------------------

hope it helps :^)
