Let, both of the numbers be 5x and 8x.

B/c,

5x-8x= 48

-3x= 48

X= 48/3

X= 16

therefore the smaller number is,

5 x = 90

Let assume be any constant term =X so, the number be 5X and 8X ( according to the ratio given).

Now second condition, Difference =48.

Here are two option either substract 5X -8X or 8X -5X both are right and okay.

Let suppose we substract 5X-8X=48

-3X=48

X=-16

So, the number will be -80 and - 128. The smaller number will be -128 answer okay. Because when we count the smaller number in negative term which is larger one that is smaller one number.

Now, 8X-5X=48

3X=48

X=16

So, the number will be 80 and 128. The smaller number will be 80 answer.
