Let x be the proportion constant of the ratio of the numbers;
so 3x+8x=165
    11x=165
    x=15
there fore the numbers are 3x=45 and 8x=120

\\\\Let\:the\:first\:number\:is=3x\\\\and\:second\:number\:is=8x\\\\According\:to\:th\:question,\\\\\implies 3x+8x=165\\\\\implies11x=165\\\\\implies x=\frac{165}{11}\\\\\implies x=15\\\\\therefore\:1^s^t\:number=3\times15=\boxed{45}\\\\and\:2^n^d\:number=8\times15=\boxed{120}
