SOLUTION

TO CHOOSE THE CORRECT OPTION

Two numbers are in the ratio 2 : 5, their LCM is 40. The smallest number

(i) 10

(ii) 8

(iii) 20

(iv) 4

CONCEPT TO BE IMPLEMENTED

LCM :

For the given two or more numbers LCM is the least number which is exactly divisible by each of the given numbers

EVALUATION

Here it is given that two numbers are in the ratio 2 : 5

Let the two numbers are 2N and 5N

Then LCM = 2 × 5 × N = 10N

Their LCM is 40

So by the given condition

10N = 40

⇒ N = 4

So the numbers are

First number = 2N = 2 × 4 = 8

Second number = 5N = 5 × 4 = 20

Hence the smaller number = 8

FINAL ANSWER

Hence the correct option is (ii) 8
