Answer:

The required numbers are -32 and -56

Step-by-step explanation:

Given :

  • Two numbers are in the ratio 4 : 7
  • Two-seventh of larger number exceeds three - fourth of smaller by 8

To find :

the numbers

Solution :

Let the numbers be

  • 4x
  • 7x

The larger number = 7x

The smaller number = 4x

➙ Two - seventh of larger number = (2/7) × (7x) = 2x

➙ Three - fourth of smaller number = (3/4) × (4x) = 3x

Two- seventh of larger number exceeds three - fourth of smaller by 8.

 ⤳ 2x = 3x + 8

 ⤳ 2x - 3x = 8

 ⤳ -x = 8

 ⤳ x = -8

➣ 4x = 4(-8) = -32

➣ 7x = 7(-8) = -56

The numbers are -32 and -56

Verification :

Two numbers are in the ratio 4 : 7

   \sf \dfrac{-32}{-56}=\dfrac{4}{7} \\\\ \sf \dfrac{32}{56}=\dfrac{4}{7} \\\\ \sf \dfrac{8 \times 4}{8 \times 7}=\dfrac{4}{7} \\\\ \sf \dfrac{4}{7}=\dfrac{4}{7} \\\\ \sf LHS=RHS

hence verified!
