Two numbers are in the ratio 5:6 and if 4 is subtracted from each , they are reduced to 2 : 3, then the highest number is 8

Solution:

Two numbers are in the ratio 5 : 6

Let the first number be 5a

Let the second number be 6a

If 4 is subtracted from each , they are reduced to 2:3

\frac{5a-4}{6a-4} = \frac{2}{3} \\\\15a - 12 = 12a - 8\\\\3a = 12-8\\\\3a=4\\\\a =\frac{4}{3}

Thus \\\\First\ number = 5a = 5 \times \frac{4}{3} = 6.667 \\\\ Second\ number = 6a = 6 \times \frac{4}{3} =8

Thus, highest number is 8
