Two numbers are in the ratio 5:6

=>let the number be 5 and 6x

=>
if 8 is substracted from each of the number ,the ratio becomes 4:5.

=>so let us form an euqation

=>
 \frac{5x - 8}{6x - 8}  =  \frac{4}{5}

now let us do cross multipliction

=>4(6x - 8) = 5 (5x - 8)

=> 24x - 48 = 25x - 40

=>24x - 25x  = 48-40

=>-x = 8

=>x = -8 or 8

=> since they are 5x and 6x

=>5*8 = 40

=>6*8 = 48

the numbers are 40 and 48
