Question

Two numbers are in the ratio 5:6. If 8 is subtracted from each of the numbers, the ratio become 4:5. find the numbers.

Answer:

40 , 48

Step-by-step explanation:

Said that:

  • Numbers are in ratio 5:6.

  • 8 was subtracted from the number.

  • Ratio becomes 4:5.

To find :

Original Number = ?

Assumption:

Let's assume the number to be 5x and 6x

✷ 8 is subtracted from the number and ration becomes 4:5

According to this :

 \bf { \implies \: \dfrac{5x - 8}{6x - 8}  =  \dfrac{4}{5}  }

 \sf \implies \: 5(5x - 8) = 4(6x  - 8)

 \:  \sf \implies \: 25x - 24x = 40 - 32

 \sf \: x = 8

According to our assumption :

1st number was 5x = 5×8 = 40

2nd number was 6x = 6×8 = 48

What you need to know ?

  • These questions are from ratio and proportion.

  • Ratio and proportion plays an important role on our daily life front in many ways.

  • the question are solved by assumption method as shown above.

  • Propotions says that two ratios are equal.

  • Ratio is actually the difference between to comparison sets.

Let the ratio be 5x : 6x.

Given that :—

\sf~ \frac{5x  -   8}{6x  -  8}  =  \frac{4}{5}

\sf~⟹5(5x - 8) = 4(6x - 8)

\sf~⟹ 25x - 40 = 24x - 32

\sf~⟹25x - 24x = 40 - 32

\sf~ ⟹ x = 8

∴ 5x = 5 × 8 = 40

∴ 6x = 6 × 8 = 48

∴ The numbers are 40 and 48
