Question :

Two numbers are in the Ratio of 5:8 , if 4 is subtracted form each then the ratio becomes 1:2. Then Find the Smallest Number.

GiveN :

  • Ratio of two numbers is 5:8
  • If we subtract 4 ,we get ratio as 1:2

To FinD :

  • Small number

Solution :

Let the numbers be 5x and 8x

So, 5x/8x = 5/8

Now, if 4 is subtracted : the ratio became 1:2

⇒ (5x - 4)/(8x - 4) = 1/2

⇒2(5x - 4) = 8x - 4

⇒10x - 8 = 8x - 4

⇒10x - 8x = -4 + 8

⇒2x = 4

⇒x = 4/2

⇒x = 2

\therefore Value of x is 2

As after watching the ratio the denominator is greater than the numerator. So, the greater number is denominator and the smaller one is numerator.

We have to find the value smaller number which is numerator.

⇒Smaller number = 5x

⇒Smaller Number = 5(2)

⇒Smaller number = 10

\therefore Smaller Number is 10
