Let the common ratio be 'x'

==> Two numbers are in the ratio 5:9. So, the numbers will become 5x and 9x.

If 4 is added, it becomes 3:5. So, the equation will be:-

--> (5x + 4)/ (9x + 4) = 3/5

Cross Multiplication,

--> 5[5x + 4] = 3[9x + 4]

--> 25x + 20 = 27x + 12

--> 27x - 25x = 20 - 12

--> 2x = 8

--> x = 4

∴ The numbers are 5(4) and 9(4), I.e, 20 and 36.
