Let,

The first number be 5x.

According to the condition,

After subtracting 3 from each side it becomes 1 : 2.

• 5x – 3 : 9x – 3 = 1 : 2

It means,

$\longrightarrow \dfrac{5x - 3}{9x - 3} = \dfrac{1}{2}$

Transpose the denominator (2) to L.H.S. and The denominator (9x – 3) to R.H.S.,

$\longrightarrow 2(5x - 3) = 1(9x - 3)$

Now, open both the brackets.

$\longrightarrow 10x - 6 = 9x - 3$

$\longrightarrow 10x - 9x = - 3 + 6$

$\longrightarrow 1x = 3$

$\longrightarrow x = 3$

So,

The first number = 5x = 5 × 3 = 15.

The second number = 9x = 9 × 3 = 27.
