Let the ratio be x

So, Numbers are 8x and 7x

Now we are given that  40 is added to the first number and 20 is subtracted from the second number to make the new ratio of the numbers 4 : 1.

So, \frac{8x+40}{7x-20}=\frac{4}{1}

8x+40=28x-80

80+40=28x-8x

120=20x

x=6

So, Numbers are 8x = 8 \times 6= 48 and 7x= 7 \times 6 = 42
