Two numbers are such that the sum of twice the first number and thrice the second number is 36and the sum of thrice the first number and twice the second number is 39. Which is the smaller number?

first Equation: 2x+3y=36

x=(36-3y)/2

Second Equation: 3x+2y=39

x=(39-2y)/3

then:

(3(36-3y)-2(39-2y))/6=0

108-9y-78+4y=0

30-5y=0

y=30/5 = 6

then find x as :

x=(36-3(6))/2

x=9

as we see:

y is smaller number
