Let :

  • 1st number be x
  • 2nd number be y

Given :

  • x-y = 3 { assuming x is larger }
  • 3x + 2y = 9

Solution :

x - y = 3

x = y + 3 ........ equation 1

3x + 2y = 9

putting value of x from equation 1 into above equation, we get;

=> 3(y+3) + 2y = 9

=> 3y + 9 + 2y = 9

=> 5y = 9-9

=> 5y = 0

=> y = 0

putting value of y in equation 1, we get;

x = y + 3

x = 0+3

x = 3

ANSWER :

  • x = 3
  • y = 0

Verification :

  • 3 - 0 = 0 that is x - y = 3

  • 3(3)+2(0) = 9+0 = 9 ,that means 3x +2y = 9
