let one number be = x

and another be = y

According to question,

x + y = 17 -------------- 1

xy = 30 -------------- 2

in equation 1

x + y = 17

x = 17 - y

Substituting value of x in equation 2

(17 - y)y = 30

-y² + 17y = 30

y² - 17y + 30 = 0

y² -15y-2y + 30 = 0

y(y-15) -2(y - 15) = 0

( y - 2 ) ( y - 15 ) = 0

y = 2 and 15

substituting value of y in equation 1

substituting y = 2

x + y = 17

x + 2 = 17

x = 17 - 2

x = 15

substituting y = 15

x + 15 = 17

x = 17 - 15

x = 2

hence the numbers are 2 and 15
