Two objects of masses 100 gram and 200 gram are moving along the same line and direction with velocities of 2 metre per second and 1 m per second respectively. They collide and after the collision, the first object moves at a velocity of 1.67 metre per second. Determine the velocity of the second object.

Given:

Fist obj.

Mass,m₁=100g = 0.1 kg

Initial vel. ,u₁ =1m/s

Final vel,v₁=1.67m/s

Second obj.

Mass,m₂=200g=0.2kg

Initial vel. , u₂=1m/s

Final vel. , v₂ = ?

Total momentum before collision = Total momentum after collision

m₁u₁+m₂u₂=m₁v₁+m₂v₂

0.1 * 2 + 0.2*1 = 0.1*1.67 + 0.2v₂

0.2+0.2 = 0.167 + 0.2v₂

0.4= 0.167 + 0.2v₂

0.4-0.167=0.2v₂

0.233=0.2v₂

0.233/0.2=v₂

2.33/2=v₂       (PS: 0.233* 10 / 0.2 * 10 as denominator is a decimal)

1.165m/s = v₂
