Answer: option (1) mg/E is correct answer

Explanation: The weight of the body (mg) is acting vertically downward while the electric field(E) is vertically upward and hence the electric force(qE) is vertically upward where q is the +ve charge on the body.

For attaining equilibrium, the gravitational and electric forces should cancel each other.

Therefore,  mg=qE

             => q=mg/E

So, 1st option is correct.

Therefore the charge on particle is mg/E.

Given : A particle of mass m is in equilibrium in a vertical electric field of magnitude E directed upward.

To find : The charge on particle.

solution : As an electric field of magnitude E directed upward, it is balanced by weight of particle which directs vertically downward.

at equilibrium,

upward force = downward force

⇒electrostatic force exerted on particle = weight of particle

⇒qE = mg [ let charge on particle is q. ]

⇒q = mg/E

Therefore the charge on particle is mg/E.
