Given: Two particles of masses 3 kg and 4 kg are separated by a distance of 7 m
To find: the centre of mass of the system from the centre of the first particle
Solution: we are given the distance between two masses and we know that the product of distance of masses from the centre of mass and mass is equal.
which can be written as
d1m1 = d2m2
where d1, d2 are distances of masses m1, m2 from the centre of mass.
so, d1/d2 = 4/3
also we are given that
d1 + d2= 7
on solving this equation we will get
4d2/3 + d2 = 7
7d2/3 = 7
d2 = 3m and d1 = 4m
Therefore the centre of mass is located at a distance of 4m from the first mass.
