Two particles A and B are connected by a rigid rod AB. The rod slides along perpendicular rails as shown here. The velocity of A to the left is 10m/s. What is the velocity of B when angle is 60°

Let the velocity along x and y axes be vx and vy respectively.

∴vx=dxdt and vy=dydy

From figure, tanα=yx ⇒y= xtanα

Differentiating Eq. (i) w.r.t. t, we get dydt=dxdttanα ⇒ vy=vxtanα

Here, vx=10m/s, α=60o

∴vy=10tan60o=103√=17.3m/s

Hence, the velocity of B at an angle of 60 degree is 17.3 m/s.
