Given :

The speed of particle 1 (v₁) = 0.8c

The speed of particle 2 (v₂) = 0.8c

To find :

The velocity of one particle with respect to the other

Solution :

  • The particles are moving in opposite direction, so one of the particles will have negative speed with respect to the other particle
  • Relative  velocity =  v₂ - v₁

              v₁₂ = v₂ - v₁

              v₁₂ = 0.8c -(-0.8c)

              v₁₂ = 0.8c + 0.8c

              v₁₂ = 1.6c

The relative velocity of one particle with respect to the other is 1.6c.
