Let the final velocities of M and 2m bc ν1 and ν2respectively, as shown in Fig. 

By conservation of momentum, we get 

m(2ν)2m(−ν)=m(ν1)+2m(ν2)

or 0=mν1+2mν2

or ν1+2ν2=0

  

and since the collision is elastic,

ν2−ν1=2ν−(−ν)

or ν2−ν1=3ν

Solving the above two equations, we get 

ν2=ν and ν1=−2ν

That is, mass 2m returns with velocity ν while mass m returns with velocity 2ν in the direction shown in Fig.
