Explanation:

let us assume that mass A is at origin .

its distance from mass B is 1m.

So,

x cm = (m1x1 + m2x2) / (m1+m2)

= 1 x 0 + 4 × 1 / 1 + 4

= 0.8

Given - Masses : 1 kg and 4 kg

Distance 1 metre

Find - Location of centre of mass

Solution - The formula to calculate centre of mass is : m1x1 + m2x2/(m1 + m2).

Here, in the formula, m1 and m2 are masses and X1 and X2 are positions of masses m1 and m2.

Let us say that position of m1 be 0. So, x1 is 0. Now, keeping the values to find centre of mass.

Centre of mass = 1*0 + 4*1/(1 + 4)

Centre of mass = 0 + 4/5

Centre of mass = 4/5

Centre of mass = 0.8

Hence, location of centre of mass is 0.8
