Answer:

Consider the problem as pure maths and no consideration of fluid mechanics.

assuming the capacity of tank as K. The capacity to flow of pipes A, B and C are K/15,K/12 and K/6 also assume that if all 3 pipes are open and tank is full initially, it take X hrs to empty the tank .following equation can be formed:

X[K/15 +K/12 - K/6]= -K

-XK/60 = -K. Or X = 60

therefore if all 3 pipes are open to gather with full tank it will take 60 hrs to empty the tank.

Given : pipes A and b can fill a petrol tanker in 15 and 12 hours respectively

pipe C can empty the whole tanker in 6 hours

Tank is full

All pipes are opened together

To Find :  how long would they take to empty it

Solution:

pipes A   can fill a petrol tanker in 15  hrs

=> pipe A fill in 1 hr = 1/15

pipe  A   can fill a petrol tanker in 12  hrs

=> pipe A fill in 1 hr = 1/12

pipe  C   can empty a petrol tanker in 6  hrs

=> pipe C can empty in 1 hr = 1/6

Opened all together empty in 1 hr

= 1/6 - 1/15 - 1/12

= (10 - 4 - 5)/60

= 1/60

Hence 60 hrs will be taken to empty the tank
