Two pipes running together can fill a cistern in 6min .if one pipe takes 5min more than the other to fill it. Find the time in which each pipe would fill the cistern

& pipe B takes = (x + 5) mins

1/x + 1/(x+5) = 1/6

6(2x + 5) = x(x+5)

12x + 30 = x^2 + 5x

x^2 - 7x - 30 = 0

x^2 - 10x + 3x - 30 = 0

x = 10 , -3

neglect - 3, time can't be taken as -ve .

pipe A can fill the cistern in 10 minsand pipe B will fill it in

= x+5 = 10+5 = 15 minutes
