Given:

  • Two pipes together can fill a tank in 12 hours.

To Find:

  • In how many hours will the second pipe take to fill tank.

Solution:

Let's assume the first pipe take n hours to fill the tank.

Then the second pipe will take (n+10) hours.

according to the question

                \frac{1}{n}  + \frac{1}{n+10} = \frac{1}{12}

          ⇒  12(n+10) + 12n=n^2 + 10n

          ⇒  24n+120=n^2+10n

          ⇒  n^2-14n-120=0

          ⇒  (n-20)(n+6)=0

          ⇒  n=20

First pipe can fill the pipe in 20 hours.

Second pipe fill the pipe = n+10

                                         =20+10

                                           =30 hours

Thus, The second pipe fill the pipe in 30 hours.
