Two places A and B are 80km apart from each other on a high way. A car starts from A and another from B at the same time. If they move in the same direction they meet in 8 hours and if they move towards each other they meet in 1 hour 20 minutes. Find the speed of the cars

Answer:

Speed of Car A =35 km/hr

Speed of car B =25 km/hr

Step-by-step explanation:

Given A to B distance = 80km

let the speed of car A be x

and speed of car B be y

let us assume that both the cars meet at C

then ,

distance covered by carA is equal to AC

distance covered by carB is equal to BC

AC- BC = AB

i.e AC - BC = 80km

speed is equal to distance by time

then d= speed × time

case 1

time taken to cover distance AC as well as BC is 8 hours

therefore

AC = x × 8 = 8x

BC = y × 8

AC minus b c is equal to 80 therefore,

8 x - 8 Y =80

x-y = 10.......(i)

case 2

1 hour 20 minutes is equal to 4 / 3 hours

A and B meets at point O when they move in the same direction

therefore

AO+ BO = AB

AO= s × t = x × 4/3

BO= s × t= y× 4/3

4x/ 3 + 4y/3 = 80km

4x+4y= 80×3

4x+4y= 240

x+y = 60.......(ii)

Solving (i) and (ii)

x - y =10

x+y = 60

2x = 70

x=70/2 = 35km/hr

therefore y=60-x = 60-35 = 25km/hr
