Question :

Two point charges 4 μC and -4 μC are placed at a distance 1.5 m. Total number of points except infinity, where potential due to system of charges is zero?

Answer :

Total number of points except infinity, where potential due to system of charges is zero is INFINITE.

Given :

Two point charges = 4 μC and -4 μC respectively

Distance between two charges = 1.5m

To find :

Total number of points except infinity, where potential due to system of charges is zero

Solution :

Let 'O' be the mid point between the two charges.

Hence distance between O to 4 μC = 1.5m/2

= 0.75 m

distance between O to -4 μC = 1.5m/2

= 0.75 m

At the point O , the value of potential = 0

Since, we know that ,

Vo = Kq / (r/2) + Kq / (r/2)

Vo = {K × 4 × 10^(-6) / 0.75} + { K×(-4) × 10^(-6) / 0.75}

Vo = 0 ( Since '+' and '_' cancels each other )

Hence, there are infinite no.of lines on the equatorial line, so total number of points except infinity, where potential due to system of charges is zero is INFINITE.
