Two point charges of 30μC and 40μC are 20 cm apart from each other . Where will be the electric field zero on the line joining the from 30μC charge ?

Answer:

The electric field will be zero, at the distance 9.27cm from point charge 30μC.

Explanation:

The first charge q₁= 30μC = 30 ×10⁻⁶C

The second  charge q₂ = 40μC = 40 ×10⁻⁶C

The distance between the two charges d= 20cm= 0.2m

Consider that a point O between two charges where the electric field will be zero. The distance between point O and charge q₁ is x and between point O and charge q₂ is 20-x.

Electric field at point O due to charge q₁ is E₁  =\frac{Kq_{1}}{x^{2}}                    ...........(2)

Electric field at point O due to charge q₂ is E₂ =\frac{Kq_{2}}{(0.2-x)^{2}}                 ..........(1)

The electric field will be zero when E₁ = E₂:

\frac{Kq_{1}}{(x)^{2}}=\frac{Kq_{2}}{(0.2-x)^{2}}

\frac{30*10^{-6}}{x^{2}} =\frac{40*10^{-6}}{(0.1-x)^{2}}

\frac{3}{x^{2}} =\frac{4}{(20-x)^{2}}

Square root on both sides :-

\frac{1.73}{x} =\frac{2}{(20-x)}

1.73(20-x)=2x

34.6-1.73x=2x

3.73x=34.6

x=9.27cm

Therefore, at the distance 9.27cm from the charge 30μC the electric field will be zero.
