The distance between the tops is 13 meters, worked out as under.
Given, feet of the poles are 12 meters apart & heights are 18 m and 13 m
Difference in height = 18–13 =5 meters
Now, we get a Right Angled triangle with 2 of the 3 sides, 12 m and 5 meters and assume the third side or hypotenuse(the distance between tops) as X meters.
According to Pythagoras theorem, X^2 = 12^2 + 5^2 = 144+25=169 and
X = Square root of 169 =13 meters
Thus, distance between the tops = 13 meters(Answer)
