Given data : Two poles of height 16m and 40m stand on a plane ground. If the distance between their feet is 7 m.

To find : The distance between tops of two poles ?

Solution : Let, two poles are perpendicular to the plane.

Now,

⟹ Height of first pole = 16 m

⟹ Height of second pole = 40 m

Here, second pole is longer than first pole so,

⟹ Height of second pole - Height of first pole

⟹ 40 - 16

⟹ 24 m

Here, to find distance between tops of two poles,

Perpendicular distance between two poles from height of first pole is 7 m.

Let, distance between tops of two poles be the hypotenuse.

Now, by Pythagoras theorem

⟹ (hypo)² = (7)² + (24)²

⟹ (hypo)² = 49 + 576

⟹ (hypo)² = 625

⟹ hypo = √625

⟹ hypo = 25 m

Answer : The distance between tops of two poles is 25 m.
