height of the point of intersection  = ab/(a + b)

Step-by-step explanation:

ΔCOL ≈ ΔCBA

h/a  = x/(x + y)

ΔAOL ≈ ΔADC

h/b  = y/(x + y)

adding both

h/a + h/b = x/(x + y) +y/(x + y)

=> (bh + ah)/ab = (x + y)/(x + y)

=> h(a + b)/ab = 1

=> h = ab/(a + b)
