As per the question,

x - y = 20

and,

x = 3y

Now,

substituting 'x = 3y' in 'x - y = 20'

x - y = 20

3y - y = 20

2y = 20

y = 10

so y = 10 and x = 3y or 3 × 10 = 30

y =10 and x = 30
